21 Days.21 days.
21 days until opening night.
That's right, 21 days will find me onstage in our school production of Bye Bye Birdie, portraying Mae Peterson (a very saucy momma).
For those not in the know, BBB is the story of Albert Peterson, a kind of spineless momma's boy, who is head of a music company, and agent to the US's biggest star--Conrad Birdie (think Elvis). Albert's secretary and girlfriend, Rosie, wants nothing more than for him to give up the music business and go back to school to become an English teacher, which was his dream.
Rosie finally decides that enough is enough, and she's done waiting around on Albert. When she breaks the news to him, she finds out that Albert's in a bit of a jam--Conrad has been drafted to fight in Vietnam, and Al doesn't have the money to pay him what his contract says he should. So Rosie decides to help Albert one last time, but only if he'll tell his mother (that's me!) that he's giving up music. Rosie picks a name out of the Conrad Birdie fan club--Kim MacAfee. She's the lucky girl who will get to kiss Conrad on national television.
Hillarity ensues as Mae (me!), being her over-dramatic, over-protective self freaks out when she sees her son with a "Mexicali Rose," Kim's boyfriend Hugo is consumed with jealousy of Conrad, Conrad wants a little action (wink, wink), Rosie gets fed up with Albert, Mr. MacAfee becomes obsessed with getting on the Ed Sullivan show, and the local teens are fanatically obsessed with Conrad.
I won't tell you the ending, but I'll tell you that it's a fantastic show, and I have the awesomest part--it's a pretty central, supporting roll, probably the fourth or fifth largest in the entire show, and it has the most hillarious dialoge.
And I LOVE the cast--everyone is so great, and I especially love the kids I'm close to--Albert, Rosie, Conrad, Kim, the MacAfees, Hugo...they're all played by extremely talented people, and I'm very humbled to share a stage with them.
So, to wrap it up, I have 21 days to make sure I know that show inside and out...all of my lines and stage directions........yeah, that should be fun! lol
